Digital storytelling is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. There is a different term to describe this practice such as digital essay, and electronic memories but they all aim to combine the telling stories art with a variety of audio, pictures, videos ..etc.


Characteristics of digital stories:

  •  focus on a specific topic and contains a specific point of view as traditional storytelling story.

  • contain some mixture of computer-based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips, and/or music.

  • variety in length, but most of the stories used in education typically last between 2 and 10 minutes.

 

Why does the digital storytelling consider a powerful learning tool?

The benefits of storytelling to students in general :

  • allowing students to feel part of the community that knows their story,

  • fosters empathy for those that surround students such parents and friends

  • . Is a powerful force in shaping mental models, motivating and persuading.  

 

The benefits of Digital storytelling in particular :

  • Improving student research skills for example through searching for a topic.

  • Resourcing selections of media sources such as images, and video clips.

  • Improving writing skills especially in script writing.

  • Developing students’ technical skills.

  • Creativity in presentation and production.

  • Helping students to develop basic oral, written and digital skill.

 

Steps to helping students develop and publish a Digital Learning Story:


1- Researching

In this step, students do an extensive research on the topic of their story they want to create. It is recommended to use a mind map to process this step easily. It also helps students to keep track of information. Here are some websites student can use.

   2- Script Writing
Students here have to write their own story which should consist story factors such as plot, characters, and setting. Then, Students select major parts those they want to share in their digital story and start writing the script. Students should be provided with some handout to help them to follow this step easily.                                     3- Storyboarding :                               

 Here is where students transfer their story to visual media literacies. This step is important because it can assist students to create their digital story in a well-organized form.  Storyboarding is the step to understand sound and images. It is the plan that will guide students to make a decision about their images, video, and sound. Here is a website can help students.

4- Resource Selection
During this step, students should try to find the appropriate images, video clips, and other media that are presenting in their process digital story. They need to use their storyboard as a guide, then they will gather/create their images, audio, and video. For example, through this time,  students should record themselves reading their scripts. 5-Putting together
